RESUMO

We measured the nuclear-recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a monoenergetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4 keV down to 100 eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100 eV. These results call for further investigation of the ionization yield theory and a comprehensive determination of the detector response function at energies below the keV scale.

RESUMO

Appendiceal diverticula present as rare clinical finding and are most confused with acute appendicitis. A 65-year-old female was presented to our surgical service after 1 day of right lower quadrant abdominal pain and a computed tomography evaluation, read as a diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Due to the location and quality of pain and intraoperative findings acute appendicitis was our preliminary diagnosis. Follow up with histopathology confirmed acute inflammation of an appendiceal diverticulum. With discordance in original diagnosis from final pathological evaluation, we suggest appendiceal diverticula as an important differential to consider in patients of similar clinical presentation. Surgical treatment with appendectomy and final histological diagnosis are essential in the proper treatment of this rare clinical finding.

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved efficient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to lightly ionizing particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits calculated using the optimum interval method on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than e/(3×10^{5}), as well as the strongest limits for charge ≤e/160, with a minimum vertical intensity of 1.36×10^{-7} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} at charge e/160. These results apply over a wide range of LIP masses (5 MeV/c^{2} to 100 TeV/c^{2}) and cover a wide range of ßγ values (0.1-10^{6}), thus excluding nonrelativistic LIPs with ßγ as small as 0.1 for the first time.

We present limits on spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions using a 10.6 g Si athermal phonon detector with a baseline energy resolution of σ_{E}=3.86±0.04(stat)_{-0.00}^{+0.19}(syst) eV. This exclusion analysis sets the most stringent dark matter-nucleon scattering cross-section limits achieved by a cryogenic detector for dark matter particle masses from 93 to 140 MeV/c^{2}, with a raw exposure of 9.9 g d acquired at an above-ground facility. This work illustrates the scientific potential of detectors with athermal phonon sensors with eV-scale energy resolution for future dark matter searches.

The basic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model is extended to include effects of progressive social awareness, lockdowns and anthropogenic migration. It is found that social awareness can effectively contain the spread by lowering the basic reproduction rate R 0 . Interestingly, the awareness is found to be more effective in a society which can adopt the awareness faster compared to the one having a slower response. The paper also separates the mortality fraction from the clinically recovered fraction and attempts to model the outcome of lockdowns, in absence and presence of social awareness. It is seen that staggered exits from lockdowns are not only economically beneficial but also helps to curb the infection spread. Moreover, a staggered exit strategy with progressive social awareness is found to be the most efficient intervention. The paper also explores the effects of anthropogenic migration on the dynamics of the epidemic in a two-zone scenario. The calculations yield dissimilar evolution of different fractions in different zones. Such models can be convenient to strategize the division of a large zone into smaller sub-zones for a disproportionate imposition of lockdown, or, an exit from one. Calculations are done with parameters consistent with the SARS-COV-2 pathogen in the Indian context.

A hybrid antiresonant reflecting waveguide, type B (ARROW-B) plasmonic waveguide based on the resonant coupling between a guided dielectric mode and surface plasmon polariton wave is proposed. Employing the finite element method, hybrid modes including two bound supermodes are obtained at visible frequencies by varying the environmental refractive index. We investigate the propagation characteristics of hybrid modes, where the significant change of modal power by the symmetric bound mode is observed in plasmonic waveguide coupling suitable for highly sensitive detection of bulk refractive index change. Further, anomalous dispersion is shown by the antisymmetric bound mode which leads to large group velocity dispersion of -3.165×10(4) ps/km nm and, thus, makes this hybrid plasmonic waveguide ideal for observation of soliton generation.

Most natural ecosystem populations suffer from various infectious diseases and the resulting host-pathogen dynamics is dependent on host's characteristics. On the other hand, empirical evidences show that for most host pathogen systems, a part of the host population always forms a refuge. To study the role of refuge on the host-pathogen interaction, we study a predator-prey-pathogen model where the susceptible and the infected prey can undergo refugia of constant size to evade predator attack. The stability aspects of the model system is investigated from a local and global perspective. The study reveals that the refuge sizes for the susceptible and the infected prey are the key parameters that control possible predator extinction as well as species co-existence. Next we perform a global study of the model system using Lyapunov functions and show the existence of a global attractor. Finally we perform a stochastic extension of the basic model to study the phenomenon of random refuge arising from various intrinsic, habitat-related and environmental factors. The stochastic model is analyzed for exponential mean square stability. Numerical study of the stochastic model shows that increasing the refuge rates has a stabilizing effect on the stochastic dynamics.

Pica has been considered as the ingestion of inedible substances or atypical food combinations. Pica has been reported widely in pediatric age group and often found to be co existing with obsessive compulsive or major depressive disorder. Reports of pica in elderly age group are relatively uncommon and rarely does it have an adult onset. In this article we present a case of adult onset pica. A young lady with unusual sensation in her abdomen was found to consume iron nails over years and there was history of dyspareunia since her marriage three months back. On query it was known that the lady is having same sex relationship over years. There unique conglomeration of cultural, psychodynamic and physiological determinants which together is responsible for this unusual habit of this lady. Moreover the onset of the disease at a late age and different psychodynamic issues make the case all the more interesting. Whether the pica is an eating disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder is still controversial. Pica has been mentioned in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV TR. The present case report warrants the need to look into this entity more closely with regards to its occurrence and etiology.

This cross sectional record based institutional study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan over ten years (1999-2008) aiming analysis of eclamptic mothers for evaluation of maternal and perinatal outcome with different anticonvulsant medications. Total 5991 pregnant mothers with eclampsia admitted in the inpatient department of the tertiary care teaching hospital were recruited for the study, irrespective of their previous antenatal check up history. Subjects with known seizure disorders were excluded from the study. The subjects were managed according to standard regimens (Menon, Ph-sodium, diazepam & magnesium sulphate) and results were documented in standardised format. Case fatality rate, mean induction delivery time & birth-weight, perinatal mortality rates were recorded. Study reveals that the incidence of eclampsia <20 years was 6.97% and majority (5.41%) came from rural areas. Eclampsia was noted primarily in primigravida (7.43%) and unbooked (6.41%) mothers. Ante partum eclampsia predominated (64%) and incidence of caesarean section was 22.25%.The overall case fatality rate was 6.05% and eclampsia contributed 27.85% of all maternal deaths during the last two years of the study period. The overall incidence of low birth weight baby was 26.96% and perinatal mortality was 30.33% (1411/4651).The incidence of perinatal mortality and low birth weight babies are lower in the last 4 years when compared to earlier studies. Proper socio-demographic assessment of pregnancy with eclampsia, planned delivery, shorter induction delivery interval, good control of convulsion by magnesium sulphate, intensive intranatal monitoring causes less maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality.

Formations of Y and T nano junctions have been observed in boron nitride films deposited on silicon substrates by plasma chemical reaction of diborane (B2H6 diluted in hydrogen) and ammonia (NH3) gases using dual frequency (microwave/radio) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique without any intentional heating of the substrates. It has been observed that these nano junctions form at a critical feed gas ratio of ammonia and diborane. We have investigated the effect of gas feed ratio R (=NH3/B2H6) in the plasma reaction chamber, keeping all other deposition parameters constant, on the morphology of boron nitride films. The deposited films are characterized by SEM, AFM, TEM and Laser Raman. For gas feed ratio, R < 100, octahedron and cubic morphologies have been observed in BN films and on increasing R to >100, size of the crystallites reduces to nanometer level. In some of our BN samples deposited at a critical value of gas ratio (R = 400), uniform Y and T junctions having bamboo like morphologies, in nanometer level, have been observed, which we wish to emphasis here as an interesting and newer observation in boron nitride films deposited by the dual frequency PECVD technique. This change in morphology exhibited by varying gas feed ratio is mainly due to excess nitrogen ions in the plasma.

The present paper studies a minimal prey-predator model in the context of marine plankton interaction together with predation by planktivorous fish. The time lag required for gestation of the predator is incorporated and the resulting delayed model is analyzed for stability and bifurcation phenomena. A stochastic extension of the model is considered by perturbing the growth process of phytoplankton using colored noise process known to be more appropriate for the marine environment. The stochastic models with and without gestation delay are analyzed for stability aspects and a threshold value of gestation delay is obtained; this threshold is then compared with that of the deterministic model.

Wnt signaling follows canonical and non-canonical pathways to regulate a variety of processes during cellular homeostasis and development. The large T-antigen (T-Ag) of the human neurotropic JC virus, has been shown to modulate the Wnt-signaling pathway via interaction with beta-catenin, one of the most important components of the canonical Wnt pathway. Here, we have identified an alternative non-canonical pathway that allows T-Ag to recruit Rac1 for stabilizing beta-catenin by inhibiting its ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation. We demonstrate that inhibition of Rac1 by its dominant negative mutant, RacN17, abrogates T-Ag-mediated stabilization of beta-catenin yet exhibits no impact on the transcriptional activity of beta-catenin. Results from immunocytochemistry revealed that together with T-Ag, a pool of beta-catenin appears at the cell surface, particularly at the membrane ruffles where active Rac1 is positioned. Interestingly, cooperativity between T-Ag and beta-catenin leads to activation of Rac1, which in turn, stimulates its association with beta-catenin. These observations unravel the interplay between beta-catenin and Rac1 that is initiated by T-Ag and results in stabilization of beta-catenin and its presence in cell membrane ruffles.

The paper is concerned with the effect of variable dispersal rates on Turing instability of a non-Lotka-Volterra reaction-diffusion system. In ecological applications, the dispersal rates of different species tends to oscillate in time. This oscillation is modeled by temporal variation in the diffusion coefficient with large as well as small periodicity. The case of large periodicity is analyzed using the theory of Floquet multipliers and that of the small periodicity by using Hill's equation. The effect of such variation on the resulting Turing space is studied. A comparative analysis of the Turing spaces with constant diffusivity and variable diffusivities is performed. Numerical simulations are carried out to support analytical findings.

The cyclic nature of blooms is a very interesting characteristic of marine plankton ecosystem. Release of toxins by some phytoplanktons has an important role on planktonic interactions and hence on regulating the blooms. A mathematical model describing the phytoplankton-zooplankton interaction with these characteristics is studied. The time needed for liberation of toxins by phytoplanktons is considered. To account for the spatial heterogeneity of an aquatic environment, diffusivity of different plankton populations is also incorporated into the system. Stability and bifurcation behaviour of different steady states are analysed.

RESUMO

The principle of minimum dissipation of energy is utilized to obtain the spheromak configuration as a relaxed state. The Euler-Lagrange equation for the minimum dissipative relaxed state is solved in terms of Chandrasekhar-Kendall eigenfunctions analytically generalized in the complex domain. This state is non-force-free and further shows the nonconstancy of the ratio of parallel current to the magnetic field.

RESUMO

The present communication deals with the bacteriological examination of a pond water, which is being used as one of the sources of drinking water, by multiple tube fermentation test to detect the coliform bacteria. The test was performed sequentially in three stages: presumptive, confirmed and completed coliform test. The results show that as the most probable number (MPN) index per 100 ml is 23, that pond water should be treated as nonpotable.

Sanfilippo syndrome type III A (Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) III A) is a rare, autosomal recessive, lysosomal storage disease, characterized by the accumulation of heparan sulfate and the loss of function of lysosomal heparan N-sulfatase activity. The disease leads to devastating mental and physical consequences and a mouse model that can be used to explore gene therapy and enzyme or cell replacement therapies is needed. We have previously identified a mouse with low sulfamidase activity and symptoms and pathologies typical of MPS III A (Bhaumik, M., Muller, V. J., Rozaklis, T., Johnson, L., Dobrenis, K., Bhattacharyya, R., Wurzelmann, S., Finamore, P., Hopwood, J. J., Walkley, S. U., and Stanley, P. [1999] A mouse model for mucopolysaccharidosis type III A (Sanfilippo syndrome). Glycobiology 9, 1389--1396). We now show that the sulfamidase gene of the MPS III A mouse carries a novel mutation (G91A) that gives an amino acid change (D31N) likely to interfere with the coordination of a divalent metal ion in the active site of this sulfatase. This spontaneous mouse mutant is an excellent model for MPS III A in humans as this disease often arises due to a missense mutation in lysosomal sulfamidase.

Southwell's analysis of optical multilayers within the limits of very thin films has been extended to include absorption in the multilayer for predicting the effective values of the refractive index n(e) and extinction coefficient k(e) of mixed-composition binary homogeneous films over a wide spectral region, including the high-absorption (k > 10(-2)) region. It has been found that n(e) in general is a complicated function of the optical parameters (n(1), k(1), n(2), k(2)) and volume fractions (f(1), f(2)) of the component materials in a homogeneous layer, and the expression for n(e) becomes the same as that predicted by the Drude model in the spectral region where the layers are transparent. Moreover, according to the present analysis, the volume fractions of the product of the refractive index and the extinction coefficient of the component materials of a binary composite film are additive and the sum equals the product of the effective refractive index and extinction coefficient of the composite film.
